Privacy policy
Last updated 2 October 2026. This describes what this site actually does, rather than every practice a template might cover.
The short version
Shed & Bask is a publication with no accounts, no logins and no newsletter. Three things touch your data: an analytics script, the contact form if you choose to use it, and the outbound redirect when you click through to a retailer. We do not sell or share personal information, and there is nothing to sell - we hold no customer records.
What this site collects
| What | When | Why | Who else sees it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Analytics data (pages viewed, approximate location, device, referrer) | On every page view | To see which pages are useful and which are not | Google, as the analytics provider |
| Your name, email and message | Only if you submit the contact form | So we can read and reply to your message | Microsoft, as the mail provider carrying the email |
| Affiliate click attribution | When you click a product link | So the retailer can attribute a purchase and pay the commission | The retailer (currently Amazon) |
Analytics
This site uses Google Analytics 4 to measure traffic. It records page views, a coarse location derived from your IP address, device and browser type, and the referring site. We use it to decide what to write next and to find pages that are not working. We do not use it to build a profile of you, and we have no interest in identifying individual readers.
Google processes that data as our analytics provider under its own terms. If you prefer not to be measured, browser-level tracking protection or an ad blocker will prevent the script loading, and the site works normally without it.
The contact form
If you use the contact form, the name, email address and message you type are sent to us as an email and nothing else. There is no database behind the form: the submission is not written to storage on this site.
The form includes two anti-spam measures that are worth describing because they involve your submission. A hidden field that real browsers leave empty, and a timestamp of when the page loaded - submissions that arrive within a few seconds, or more than an hour later, are rejected as automated. We also limit how many submissions a single network address can make per hour. None of that is stored beyond the moment of the request.
Emails you send us are held in our mailbox. We keep correspondence for as long as it is useful - a correction thread, for instance, we may keep so we can tell you when the page was updated - and you can ask us to delete it at any time.
Affiliate links and the redirect
Product links on this site pass through a redirect on our own domain before reaching the retailer. That redirect is server-side: no script runs in your browser, and nothing is written to your device by us at that point. Its purpose is to let us count clicks in aggregate and to let us change a destination in one place.
When you arrive at the retailer, that retailer sets its own cookies under its own privacy policy, which is how the commission is attributed. We do not receive your name, your order contents or your payment details - only aggregate reports of qualifying purchases. Our affiliate disclosure explains the commercial side.
Cookies and local storage
This site sets no cookies of its own. The analytics script sets cookies to distinguish repeat visits. Retailers you click through to set their own. There is no consent banner because there is nothing for us to ask consent for beyond analytics, which your browser settings control more reliably than a banner would.
What this site does not do
- No user accounts, logins or passwords.
- No newsletter, and no email list.
- No comments section, so no stored user content.
- No advertising network, retargeting pixels or third-party ad scripts.
- No sale or sharing of personal information. There is none to sell.
- No payment processing - you never pay us anything, so we hold no payment data.
Children
This site is written for adult reptile keepers and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has sent us a message, email us and we will delete it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected, or to have it deleted. In practice the only personal information we are likely to hold is an email you sent us. Email contact@shedandbask.com and we will deal with it.
For analytics, the most effective control is at your browser rather than through us - blocking the script prevents the collection in the first place.
Changes to this policy
If what the site does changes, this page changes with it, and the date at the top moves. We will not quietly broaden what we collect while leaving this page as it is.
