Leopard gecko
5 best leopard gecko tanks (2026), judged by floor space
Floor area is the published constraint, and it is the one a 20-gallon long misses by nearly half. Height buys a leopard gecko almost nothing.
By Brijon M.Last updated
The published adult minimum is 36 x 18 x 18 in with at least 4.5 sq ft of floor space. Floor space is the binding figure because leopard geckos are terrestrial, which is why a 20-gallon long at roughly 2.5 sq ft falls short even though it is still sold as a complete adult setup.

How we picked
Every pick below is scored against these thresholds, stated as numbers. Publishing them is the point: of the competitor roundups we surveyed, not one published a numeric selection threshold.
Meets the published adult footprint
At or above the cited minimum for the species it is sold for - 4.5 sq ft floor for a leopard gecko, about 8 sq ft for an adult ball python, 48 x 24 x 24 in or larger for a dragon, 18 x 18 x 36 in for a crested gecko
Source: ReptiFiles - Bearded Dragon Terrarium Size Requirements
Front-opening access
Doors on the front, not a lift-off lid. Less startling for the animal and harder to escape from
Holds the species humidity range
Material and lid design can hold the species target without constant intervention - 30-40% for a leopard gecko, 60-80% for a crested gecko
Takes a T5 fixture at a workable distance
Mesh top or internal mounting that puts a T5 HO lamp at its published distance - about 11 in through mesh for an Arcadia Desert 12%
Source: ReptiFiles - Bearded Dragon Temperatures & UVB Requirements
Supports a real thermal gradient
Long enough that the cool end actually reaches the species cool-side figure while the basking surface holds its target

Materials we can account for
Manufacturer states the panel material, and any interior coating has a published temperature limit above the species basking surface temperature

Why floor area and not gallons
The published guidance gives the adult minimum as 36 x 18 x 18 in with at least 4.5 sq ft of floor space, and calls out floor space as the most important consideration because leopard geckos are terrestrial, ground-dwelling lizards. That phrasing matters: the constraint is stated in square feet, not in gallons and not in volume.
A 20-gallon long is about 30 x 12 in, which is roughly 2.5 sq ft. It is still widely sold as a complete adult leopard gecko setup and it is a little over half the published figure. This is the most common undersizing on the US market and it happens because the gallon rating hides the shape.
| Enclosure | Footprint | Floor area | Against the 4.5 sq ft figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20-gallon long | 30 x 12 in | 2.5 sq ft | Below |
| 40-gallon breeder | 36 x 18 in | 4.5 sq ft | Meets |
| 36 x 18 x 18 in terrarium | 36 x 18 in | 4.5 sq ft | Meets |
| 48 x 24 x 24 in (4x2x2) | 48 x 24 in | 8 sq ft | Comfortably above |
| 18 x 18 x 36 in tall terrarium | 18 x 18 in | 2.25 sq ft | Below - and the height is wasted |
What else the enclosure has to do
- Hold a gradient. A basking surface at 94-97 F (34-36 C) surface; warm hide 90-92 F (32-33 C) with a cool end at 70-77 F (21-25 C). Glass helps here by dissipating heat.
- Stay dry. Ambient target is 30-40% ambient, with a humid hide at 70-80%, and a screen top that vents moisture is an advantage rather than a flaw for this species.
- Fit three hides. Warm, cool and humid, with the humid hide at the middle to cool end. That is a floor-area requirement in disguise.
- Take a low-output T5 at its distance. A ShadeDweller 7% sits 10 to 18 inches above the basking spot through roughly 30% mesh.
What to avoid
A 10-gallon tank at any life stage beyond a brief grow-out. A tall terrarium. Any complete kit that bundles a 20-gallon long with a coil UVB bulb and no thermostat - the arithmetic is here. And a screen-topped enclosure in a very humid home without the means to keep it dry, because this species wants the opposite of what most reptile advice assumes.
The picks in full

1. Best overall at the 36 x 18 x 18 in minimum
REPTI ZOO Front-Opening Glass Terrarium
REPTI ZOO · A leopard gecko at the 36 x 18 x 18 in minimum
A 36 x 18 in footprint is 4.5 sq ft exactly - the published adult figure - and glass is genuinely the right material here rather than a compromise. It dissipates heat well, which makes the warm-to-cool gradient straightforward, and a dry enclosure is what this species wants anyway. Front-opening with a lock.
Specifications
- Common sizes
- 36 x 18 x 18 in and 18 x 18 x 24 in among others

- Front-opening doors
- Lock
- Door lock included on most models
How it scored against our criteria
| Meets the published adult footprintAt or above the cited minimum for the species it is sold for - 4.5 sq ft floor for a leopard gecko, about 8 sq ft for an adult ball python, 48 x 24 x 24 in or larger for a dragon, 18 x 18 x 36 in for a crested gecko | Meets |

| Materials we can account forManufacturer states the panel material, and any interior coating has a published temperature limit above the species basking surface temperature | Meets |
What works
- Glass dissipates heat well, which makes a temperature gradient easier to establish
- Front-opening is less startling for the animal than reaching in from above
- Easy to see and easy to clean
What to know
- A screen top sheds humidity constantly, which is the wrong trade for a crested gecko or ball python
- Heavy, and a large glass tank is awkward to move once filled
Who should look elsewhere
If you need to hold 60-80% humidity, glass with a screen top will fight you every day. Buy PVC instead and stop misting four times a day.

2. Best if you want to go larger
Zen Habitats 4x2x2 PVC Reptile Enclosure
Zen Habitats · A 4x2x2 adult dragon or an adult ball python
8 sq ft of floor instead of 4.5, which a leopard gecko will use - floor area is the dimension this species benefits from. The humidity score is partial for an unusual reason here: PVC holds moisture well, which is a disadvantage when your target is 30-40% ambient. You will want good ventilation rather than good sealing.
Specifications
- Footprint
- 48 x 24 x 24 in (about 120 gallons)
- Material
- PVC panels with an aluminum frame

- Mesh, lamp-compatible

What works
- Front-opening, which is the access pattern every care reference prefers
- PVC holds humidity far better than screen-topped glass
- Mesh top takes a T5 HO fixture without an internal mount
What to know
- Does not reach the 24 cubic feet ReptiFiles now sets as its bearded dragon minimum
- Assembly is required and the panels are large to handle alone
Who should look elsewhere
If your dragon is a full-size adult at 19-23 in total length, the current ReptiFiles minimum is 6 x 2 x 2 ft or 24 cubic feet. Buy the 6 ft size instead of this one.

3. Not for a leopard gecko
Exo Terra Glass Terrarium 18 x 18 x 36
Exo Terra · An adult crested gecko at the published 18 x 18 x 36 in minimum
Listed deliberately with a failing footprint score, because this is the enclosure new keepers most often buy by mistake after reading gecko advice generally. 18 x 18 in is 2.25 sq ft - half the published figure - and the 36 inches of height is worthless to a ground-dwelling animal. It is the right enclosure for a crested gecko and the wrong one here.
Specifications
- Footprint
- 18 x 18 x 36 in
- Material
- Glass, front-opening doors
- Top
- Full screen, lamp-compatible
- Drainage
- Raised bottom frame suits a drainage layer

What works
- Dimensions match the published crested gecko adult minimum with nothing to convert
- Tall front doors make planting and rearranging easy
- Screen top takes a low-output T5 fixture without an internal mount
What to know
- The screen top loses humidity fast, so expect to cover part of it
- Glass at this height is heavy and needs a solid stand
Who should look elsewhere
A hatchling under 12 g should not go straight into this. Grow it out in a 12 x 12 x 12 in first so you can actually find it and monitor its weight.
Frequently asked questions
How big should a leopard gecko enclosure be?
36 x 18 x 18 in with at least 4.5 sq ft of floor space. Floor area is the binding figure, not volume or height.
Is a 20 gallon long big enough for a leopard gecko?
No. A 20-gallon long is about 2.5 sq ft of floor, against a published minimum of 4.5 sq ft. It is still sold as a complete adult setup, which is why this keeps happening.
Does a leopard gecko need a tall tank?
No. Leopard geckos are terrestrial, so height buys almost nothing. Spend the same money on floor area instead.
