Do bearded dragons need UVB?

Yes, and it is the clearest yes of the four species on this site. The useful question is how much, at what distance.

By Brijon M.Last updated

Yes - and more than any other species on this site. Bearded dragons are open-sun baskers at the top of Ferguson Zone 3, and the published target is UVI 4.0-4.5 at the basking surface, measured with a Solarmeter 6.5. Use a linear T5 HO lamp at the manufacturer's published mount distance, and replace it every 12 months.

Why the answer is unambiguous here

A bearded dragon is a diurnal, open-sun basking desert lizard. In the wild it thermoregulates by exposing itself to high UV during the day, which places it at the upper end of Ferguson Zone 3 with individuals occasionally reaching Zone 4 at midday. UVB drives vitamin D3 synthesis, which is what allows dietary calcium to be used. Without it, calcium supplementation does far less than the label implies, and metabolic bone disease is the long-term outcome.

The number, and how to hit it

The published target is UVI 4.0-4.5 at the basking surface, with the optimal gradient running from 0 at the far cool end up to that figure at the basking site. Two routes to it:

Published mount distances for bearded dragon UVB lamps
LampThrough meshNo mesh
Arcadia T5 HO Desert 12%11 in / 27 cm16-17 in / 40.5-42 cm
Arcadia T5 HO Dragon 14%11-12 in / 28-30 cm17-18 in / 43-45 cm

Those figures assume roughly a 45% mesh block. If you do not own a meter, the published advice is to add 1 to 3 inches to account for your particular dragon's height, and to make the basking area the highest point in the enclosure and the closest point to the lamp.

Three rules that go with it

  • Tube length. Roughly half the enclosure length, on the same side as the heat lamps: 22 inches for a 4 ft enclosure, 34 inches for a 6 ft.
  • No shield. UVB is blocked by glass and plastic, so a fixture with a cover over the lamp provides none at all.
  • Replace at 12 months. Output declines well before visible light does.

And the lighting that is not UVB

Beyond UVB and basking heat, the guidance recommends bright approximately 6500 K illumination for optimal wellbeing, covering 75 to 100% of the enclosure length - which may mean more than one lamp. It is the easiest improvement to a dragon setup that nobody talks about, and it visibly changes activity levels.

The full setup, with heat and substrate, is on the bearded dragon lighting page, and the enclosure that has to accommodate it is covered in the sizing guide.

For a standard mesh-top enclosure

Arcadia T5 HO Desert 12% UVB Lamp

11 in above the basking surface through mesh lands the UVI 4.0-4.5 target. Published figure, not an estimate.

For a taller enclosure

Arcadia T5 HO Dragon 14% UVB Lamp

14% buys clearance: 11-12 in through mesh, 17-18 in without, when the platform cannot be raised.

Frequently asked questions

How much UVB does a bearded dragon need?

UVI 4.0-4.5 at the basking surface, measured with a Solarmeter 6.5. The optimal gradient runs from 0 at the cool end to that figure at the basking site.

What happens if a bearded dragon has no UVB?

Without UVB a dragon cannot synthesize vitamin D3 effectively, which means dietary calcium is poorly used. The long-term outcome is metabolic bone disease. This is the single most consequential omission in a dragon setup.

Can a bearded dragon get UVB through a window?

No. UVB is blocked by glass. The same principle is why a UVB fixture must not have a glass or plastic shield over the lamp.

How many hours of UVB does a bearded dragon need?

12-14 hours of light per day, seasonally adjusted. The photoperiod guide has the seasonal detail.

Wattage and percentage tell you almost nothing on their own. UV index at a stated mount distance is the number that decides whether a lamp is right for your animal.
