The line items

Leopard gecko setup line items in buying priority order
PriorityLine itemWhat drives the cost
1Enclosure at 4.5 sq ft or largerSize and material. The item you cannot incrementally upgrade
2ThermostatControl type - on/off for a mat, dimming for a halogen
3Heat sourceA mat is cheaper than an overhead halogen plus fixture
4Infrared gun + probe thermometer/hygrometerCheap relative to everything above, and non-optional
5Three hidesMaterial; cork rounds and plant pots work
6Sphagnum moss for the humid hideSmall, recurring
7SubstrateVolume at 3-4 in depth
8Low-output T5 UVB and fixtureFixture is one-time, tube is annual
9Water dish and low decorDiscretionary

Recurring costs

  • UVB tube: every 12 months, if you run UVB.
  • Substrate: every 3 to 6 months unless bioactive.
  • Humid hide moss: rinsed or replaced monthly.
  • Electricity: low for this species - a leopard gecko setup is among the cheapest to run on this site, because the heat demand is modest and there is usually no night heat. The arithmetic is here.
  • Feeder insects and supplements, and veterinary care. Budget for both.

Where you genuinely can

  • Hides. Any opaque, cleanable, correctly sized object. Plant pots on their side and cork rounds are legitimate.
  • Decor. Entirely discretionary. Collected and sterilized hardscape is fine.
  • Heat source. A thermostatted under-tank mat is cheaper than overhead halogen plus fixture, and the published figures can be met either way.
  • UVB. The honest position: geckos have been kept without it for decades, the current evidence says they benefit from it, and it is the one line item here that is a genuine judgment call rather than a requirement.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a leopard gecko enclosure cost?

We do not quote figures, because prices move and a stale number looks authoritative. The line items are listed above in priority order, each linking to current pricing. The enclosure is the largest single item.

Are leopard geckos expensive to keep?

Running costs are among the lowest of the species on this site - modest heat demand and usually no night heating. The setup is the main cost, and it is the enclosure that dominates it.

Can I set up a leopard gecko tank cheaply?

You can economize on hides, decor and by using a thermostatted mat rather than overhead halogen. Do not economize on the thermostat, the enclosure size or the measuring instruments.
