Best reptile UVB light fixtures (2026)
The fixture is not an accessory to the bulb. It is half the output figure, which is why every published mount distance assumes a specific one.

How we picked
Every pick below is scored against these thresholds, stated as numbers. Publishing them is the point: of the competitor roundups we surveyed, not one published a numeric selection threshold.
Can hit the species UVI target
Reaches the Ferguson zone basking figure for the species at a distance the enclosure actually allows - UVI 4.0-4.5 for a bearded dragon, 2.0-3.0 for a ball python, 0.5-1.5 for a leopard gecko
Source: ReptiFiles - Bearded Dragon Temperatures & UVB Requirements
Manufacturer or care reference publishes a mount distance
A stated distance in inches, with a mesh correction, not just a percentage on the box
Source: ReptiFiles - Bearded Dragon Temperatures & UVB Requirements
Linear tube, not a compact coil
T5 HO or T5 SO linear tube, so output covers a basking zone rather than a point
Source: ReptiFiles - Bearded Dragon Temperatures & UVB Requirements
Usable in an unshielded fixture
No glass or plastic over the lamp - both block UVB completely
Source: ReptiFiles - Bearded Dragon Temperatures & UVB Requirements
Stated replacement interval
12 months for a T5 fluorescent, regardless of whether visible light continues

Why the fixture is half the specification
Every distance figure on this site - 11 inches for an Arcadia Desert 12% through mesh, 10 to 14 inches for a ReptiSun 5.0 over a snake - is measured with a specific fixture. A reflector gathers output that would otherwise go upwards into the room and redirects it downwards, which roughly doubles the usable figure at the basking surface. Run the same tube in a bare housing and the number on the chart no longer describes your enclosure.
This is the most common invisible error in reptile lighting, because nothing about it is visible. The tube looks identical. The animal looks fine. The UVI is wrong.
What to check
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| Integrated reflector | Published distance charts assume one. Without it the figures are not transferable |
| No glass or plastic shield | Both block UVB completely while the visible light continues unchanged |
| Tube length matches the enclosure | About half the enclosure length for a dragon - 22 in for a 4 ft, 34 in for a 6 ft |
| Mounting method | Above mesh is the assumption in most published figures; inside the enclosure changes the arithmetic |
| Same side as the heat lamps | The basking area should be the highest point and closest to the UVB |
Mounting: above mesh, inside, or suspended
Above the mesh is what most published figures assume, with a correction of roughly 30 to 45% for the mesh block. Mounting inside the enclosure removes the mesh loss but puts the lamp within reach of a climbing animal, which raises a burn and contact risk and makes the distance harder to hold constant. Suspending the fixture from a lamp stand is the third option, and it is the one the published hatchling crested gecko advice uses specifically to create distance that a small enclosure otherwise cannot provide.
Whichever you choose, the basking platform should be the highest point in the enclosure and directly under the lamp, and the distance figure is measured to where the animal's back sits - not to the floor.
How to confirm your fixture and tube combination
Solarmeter Model 6.5 UV Index Meter
Take the reading at the basking surface, at the height the animal's back actually sits. That single measurement replaces every assumption about reflectors and mesh.
What to avoid
- A fixture with any cover over the lamp.
- Pairing a chart figure from one manufacturer with a fixture from another. Output differs enough that the distances are not interchangeable - see Arcadia vs Zoo Med.
- A fixture longer than the enclosure can mount squarely. A tilted tube produces a gradient you did not design.
The picks in full

1. Best overall T5 fixture
Arcadia ProT5 Reflector Fixture
Arcadia Reptile · Running an Arcadia T5 lamp at its published distance
The fixture Arcadia's published distance figures are measured against, which is the entire reason to buy it. A reflector roughly doubles usable output, so pairing an Arcadia tube with a bare non-reflective housing and then using the Arcadia distance chart gives you a number that does not describe your enclosure.
Specifications
- Type
- T5 HO fixture with integrated reflector
- Matters because
- Published UVI distances assume this reflector
- Lamp cover
- None - a glass or plastic shield blocks UVB entirely

| Stated replacement interval12 months for a T5 fluorescent, regardless of whether visible light continues | Meets |
What works
- A reflector roughly doubles usable output versus a bare tube, which is why distance charts assume one
- No glass or plastic shield over the lamp
- Pairs cleanly with mesh-top mounting
What to know
- Adds cost on top of the lamp
- Fixture length locks you into a tube length
Who should look elsewhere
If you already run a Vivarium Electronics T5 HO fixture, you do not need this. Keep the fixture you have and set distance with a meter.

2. Best for snake enclosures
Vivarium Electronics T5 HO Fixture
Vivarium Electronics · A low-output T5 HO over a snake enclosure
Named in the ball python lighting guidance as one of only two fixtures whose distance behavior is known well enough to work from. For a low-output tube over a snake, where the target window is narrow, that predictability is worth more than it sounds.
Specifications
- Type
- T5 HO fixture
- Named for
- Predictable output with ReptiSun and Arcadia tubes
- Mounting
- Above mesh, or suspended

What works
- Named in care guidance as a fixture whose distance behavior is known
- Solid build intended for long continuous runs
- Works with the common tube lengths
What to know
- Less widely stocked than the mass-market fixtures
- No integrated lamp, so budget for both
Who should look elsewhere
For a 12 in ShadeDweller over a gecko, buy the matched ShadeDweller kit rather than pairing a short tube with a large fixture.

3. Best matched kit for geckos
Arcadia ShadeDweller ProT5 Kit (7% UVB)
Arcadia Reptile · Leopard geckos and crested geckos
Sold as a lamp and fixture together, which removes the single biggest source of error in a Zone 1 setup: mismatching a very low-output tube to a housing whose reflectivity you cannot characterize.
Specifications
- Output
- 7% UVB, T5 SO
- Leopard gecko (normal pigment)
- 10-18 in / 25-45 cm, about 30% mesh
- Crested gecko (12 in lamp)
- 8-12 in / 20-30 cm, about 35% mesh
- Replace
- Every 12 months

What works
- Purpose-built for Zone 1 targets instead of a de-rated desert lamp
- Sold as a kit, so the fixture and lamp are already matched
- Published distances for both normal and reduced-pigment morphs
What to know
- Short tube lengths only, so it lights a zone rather than the whole enclosure
- Still needs a meter if you keep an albino
Who should look elsewhere
For an albino or patternless leopard gecko the ceiling drops to UVI 0.5-0.7. Use the ShadeDweller Max 2.5% at the published distance instead of this 7%.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a reflector on a reptile UVB fixture?
Yes, if you intend to use any published distance figure. A reflector roughly doubles usable output at the basking surface, and the charts assume one. Without it, the same lamp at the same height delivers substantially less.
Can a UVB bulb go behind glass?
No. UVB is blocked by glass and plastic, so a shielded fixture provides visible light and no UVB. A naked tube is the working tube.
How long should a UVB tube be?
For a bearded dragon, roughly half the enclosure length and on the same side as the heat lamps - 22 inches for a 4 ft enclosure, 34 inches for a 6 ft.
