How to clean a leopard gecko enclosure
Four schedules, and the one most keepers forget is the monthly humid hide - which is the item most likely to go moldy.
By Brijon M.Last updated
Spot-clean every time the gecko defecates, removing the surrounding substrate with the waste. Rinse or replace the humid hide moss monthly. Replace loose substrate every 3-6 months. Deep-clean the enclosure and accessories every 6 months with F10SC, Rescue or a 10% bleach solution, rinsed and dried thoroughly.

The four schedules
| Interval | Job | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Daily | Spot-clean and refresh water | Remove waste plus the substrate around and beneath it |
| Monthly | Humid hide maintenance | Rinse or replace the moss before it goes moldy; scrub the hide |
| Every 3-6 months | Substrate replacement | Full removal and replacement of loose substrate |
| Every 6 months | Deep clean | Enclosure and all accessories with F10SC, Rescue or 10% bleach |
Spot-cleaning, done properly
Leopard geckos typically defecate in one chosen corner, which makes daily spot-cleaning quick. The detail that matters: remove the substrate around and beneath the waste, not just the visible part. Waste wicks into the material it sits on, so lifting only the top leaves the contaminated layer behind. The published guidance states this directly for sand - for best results, remove surrounding sand along with the waste.
The humid hide, which is the mold risk
A hide that is permanently damp and permanently dark is the fastest thing in the enclosure to grow mold. It is also the item whose job depends on staying damp, so you cannot simply let it dry out.
- Check daily that the moss is damp rather than saturated or dry.
- Rinse the moss thoroughly under running water monthly, or replace it - it is cheap enough that replacement is reasonable.
- Scrub the hide itself at the same time.
- If you see mold at any point, replace the moss immediately rather than rinsing it.
Keep a spare bag
Sphagnum Moss
Replacing the moss is faster and more reliable than rinsing it, and it is inexpensive enough that monthly replacement is a reasonable routine.
Substrate replacement
Loose sand should be replaced completely every 3 to 6 months to control bacterial growth. A bioactive build is topped up and fed instead of replaced - see the bioactive guide for why that changes the whole schedule.

So a cleaning day is not also a shopping day, and the gecko is not sitting on bare glass while you wait for a delivery.
The deep clean
Every 6 months, the enclosure and all accessories get disinfected. The products named in the guidance we cite are F10SC, Rescue, or a 10% bleach solution. Two practical rules that follow:
- Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before anything goes back. Residue is the risk, not the disinfectant.
- Ventilate. Bleach in a closed glass box is a respiratory problem for you as well as for the gecko afterwards.
- Have somewhere safe for the gecko to be during the clean and the drying period - a secure, ventilated temporary container.
Water dish
The item used most and cleaned least. Rinse and refill daily, and scrub it at every spot-clean rather than waiting for the deep clean. A shallow, stable, smooth-sided dish makes this a ten-second job.
Frequently asked questions
How do you clean a leopard gecko tank?
Spot-clean daily including the substrate around the waste, maintain the humid hide monthly, replace loose substrate every 3 to 6 months, and deep-clean the enclosure and accessories every 6 months with F10SC, Rescue or a 10% bleach solution.
How often should you change leopard gecko substrate?
Every 3 to 6 months for loose substrate, to control bacterial growth. Bioactive substrates are topped up instead.
How do you stop a humid hide going moldy?
Keep the moss damp rather than saturated, rinse or replace it monthly, scrub the hide at the same time, and replace the moss immediately if you see mold rather than trying to rinse it.
