Bearded dragon
Best bearded dragon starter setup (2026)
We do not recommend a kit. We recommend a list, in the order you should buy it, because the kit economics are genuinely bad.
By Brijon M.Last updated
Buy in this order: enclosure at full adult size, thermostat, halogen basking lamp, linear T5 HO UVB at the published distance, infrared gun plus probe thermometer and hygrometer, hides, substrate at 4-6 in, then decor. Buying the lamp before the thermostat is the classic ordering error.

How we picked
Every pick below is scored against these thresholds, stated as numbers. Publishing them is the point: of the competitor roundups we surveyed, not one published a numeric selection threshold.
Meets the published adult footprint
At or above the cited minimum for the species it is sold for - 4.5 sq ft floor for a leopard gecko, about 8 sq ft for an adult ball python, 48 x 24 x 24 in or larger for a dragon, 18 x 18 x 36 in for a crested gecko
Source: ReptiFiles - Bearded Dragon Terrarium Size Requirements
Front-opening access
Doors on the front, not a lift-off lid. Less startling for the animal and harder to escape from
Holds the species humidity range
Material and lid design can hold the species target without constant intervention - 30-40% for a leopard gecko, 60-80% for a crested gecko
Takes a T5 fixture at a workable distance
Mesh top or internal mounting that puts a T5 HO lamp at its published distance - about 11 in through mesh for an Arcadia Desert 12%
Source: ReptiFiles - Bearded Dragon Temperatures & UVB Requirements
Supports a real thermal gradient
Long enough that the cool end actually reaches the species cool-side figure while the basking surface holds its target
Source: ReptiFiles - Bearded Dragon Temperatures & UVB Requirements
Materials we can account for
Manufacturer states the panel material, and any interior coating has a published temperature limit above the species basking surface temperature

The arithmetic against kits
A bearded dragon starter kit is assembled to a price point, and the price is met by cutting the three most expensive correct things: enclosure size, UVB quality and temperature control. The typical kit ships a 36 x 18 x 18 in or smaller tank, a compact coil UVB bulb, and no thermostat.
Each of those gets replaced. The tank because it is below every current standard for an adult; the coil because it lights a point rather than a basking zone and no published distance figure exists for it; the missing thermostat because an uncontrolled heat source has no upper limit. You end up buying the correct version of all three anyway, having already paid for the wrong one.
The list, with what each item is actually for
| Order | Item | Why it is at this position |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Enclosure at adult footprint | The only item that cannot be incrementally upgraded |
| 2 | Dimming or proportional thermostat | Makes the heat source safe. Buy before the lamp |
| 3 | Halogen basking lamp | Reaches the published surface figure of 108-113 F (42-45 C) surface temperature |
| 4 | T5 HO UVB lamp and reflector fixture | Reaches UVI 4.0-4.5 at the basking surface |
| 5 | Infrared gun + probe thermometer/hygrometer | The only way to verify items 2, 3 and 4 |
| 6 | Three hides and a basking slab | Cover at the warm end, cool end and mid-point |
| 7 | Substrate at 4-6 in packed | Burrowing, and a cooler microclimate |
| 8 | 6500 K daylight lamp | Covering 75-100% of the enclosure length |
| 9 | Decor, branches, water dish | Everything that is not load-bearing on welfare |
The 6500 K lamp nobody buys
Worth calling out because it is the item most setups omit entirely. Beyond UVB and basking heat, the published guidance recommends bright approximately 6500 K illumination for optimal wellbeing, covering 75 to 100% of the enclosure length - which may mean more than one lamp. It is cheap, it visibly increases activity, and it is a third lighting channel most keepers do not know exists.
What to avoid
- Any kit containing a compact coil UVB bulb.
- Heat rocks, and colored night bulbs.
- Stick-on dial thermometers as your only instrument.
- Calcium sand, vitamin sand, ground nut shell and wood shavings as substrate.
- Buying the tank you can afford today rather than the one the adult needs - that is the decision that costs the most.
The picks in full

1. Buy first: the enclosure at adult size
Zen Habitats 4x2x2 PVC Reptile Enclosure
Zen Habitats · A 4x2x2 adult dragon or an adult ball python
The one item you cannot incrementally upgrade. Buying the adult footprint on day one costs more than a starter tank and less than a starter tank plus the adult enclosure you buy eight months later.
Specifications
- Footprint
- 48 x 24 x 24 in (about 120 gallons)
- Material
- PVC panels with an aluminum frame

- Mesh, lamp-compatible
How it scored against our criteria
| Meets the published adult footprintAt or above the cited minimum for the species it is sold for - 4.5 sq ft floor for a leopard gecko, about 8 sq ft for an adult ball python, 48 x 24 x 24 in or larger for a dragon, 18 x 18 x 36 in for a crested gecko | Partial |

| Materials we can account forManufacturer states the panel material, and any interior coating has a published temperature limit above the species basking surface temperature | Partial |
What works
- Front-opening, which is the access pattern every care reference prefers
- PVC holds humidity far better than screen-topped glass
- Mesh top takes a T5 HO fixture without an internal mount
What to know
- Does not reach the 24 cubic feet ReptiFiles now sets as its bearded dragon minimum
- Assembly is required and the panels are large to handle alone
Who should look elsewhere
If your dragon is a full-size adult at 19-23 in total length, the current ReptiFiles minimum is 6 x 2 x 2 ft or 24 cubic feet. Buy the 6 ft size instead of this one.

2. Buy second: the thermostat
Spyder Robotics Herpstat 1 Proportional Thermostat
Spyder Robotics · One enclosure, one lamp, dimmed properly
Before the heat source, not after it. A halogen basking lamp needs a dimming controller, and an uncontrolled lamp is the one item on this list that can injure the animal on its first day.
Specifications
- Channels

- Control type
- Proportional / dimming

What works
- Dimming output means a basking lamp holds steady without flashing
- Alarm output catches a probe failure
- Single channel keeps the cost below a dual unit
What to know
- One channel only, so a second enclosure needs a second unit
- Overkill if your only heat source is a mat
Who should look elsewhere
Running two or more enclosures? A dual-channel unit costs less than two singles and gives you one place to check.

3. Buy third: the basking lamp
Exo Terra Intense Basking Spot Lamp
Exo Terra · Overhead basking heat on a thermostat
Halogen, because incandescent heating produces the most Infrared-A - the band that penetrates tissue rather than only warming the air. On the dimming thermostat you already bought.
Specifications
- Type
- Halogen spot (incandescent)
- Infrared
- Produces Infrared-A, the deeply penetrating band
- Control
- Must run on a dimming or pulse thermostat
- Common use
- A 50 W in a 5.5 in dome for a crested gecko basking area
How it scored against our criteria
| Meets the published adult footprintAt or above the cited minimum for the species it is sold for - 4.5 sq ft floor for a leopard gecko, about 8 sq ft for an adult ball python, 48 x 24 x 24 in or larger for a dragon, 18 x 18 x 36 in for a crested gecko | Not published |

| Materials we can account forManufacturer states the panel material, and any interior coating has a published temperature limit above the species basking surface temperature | Not published |
What works
- Halogen is the heat type current husbandry references prefer for basking
- Cheap enough to keep a spare, which you should
- Works in a standard dome fixture
What to know
- Emits visible light, so it cannot be used at night
- A single spot may be too small a basking area for a coiled snake
Who should look elsewhere
For night heat in a cold room, a halogen is the wrong tool - it lights the enclosure. Use a ceramic heat emitter in a guarded fixture instead.

4. Buy fourth: the UVB
Arcadia T5 HO Desert 12% UVB Lamp
Arcadia Reptile · A bearded dragon in a standard mesh-top enclosure
A linear T5 HO at the published distance, with a tube roughly half the enclosure length on the same side as the heat lamps - 22 in for a 4 ft enclosure. Not a coil, and not behind glass.
Specifications
- Output
- 12% UVB, T5 HO linear
- Mount distance (mesh)
- 11 in / 27 cm
- Mount distance (no mesh)
- 16-17 in / 40.5-42 cm
- Replace
- Every 12 months
How it scored against our criteria
| Meets the published adult footprintAt or above the cited minimum for the species it is sold for - 4.5 sq ft floor for a leopard gecko, about 8 sq ft for an adult ball python, 48 x 24 x 24 in or larger for a dragon, 18 x 18 x 36 in for a crested gecko | Not published |

| Materials we can account forManufacturer states the panel material, and any interior coating has a published temperature limit above the species basking surface temperature | Not published |
What works
- Published distance figures, so you can set it correctly before you own a meter
- T5 HO spreads UVB across a basking zone rather than a single point
- Pairs with a reflector fixture for predictable output
What to know
- Distances assume roughly a 45% mesh block; your mesh may differ
- Needs a dedicated T5 HO fixture, which is a separate purchase
Who should look elsewhere
For a reduced-pigment dragon (hypo, translucent, silkback) the target drops to no more than UVI 3.0. Use a lower-output lamp or more distance, verified with a meter.

5. Buy fifth: the instruments
Infrared Temperature Gun
Various (Etekcity, Lasergrip) · Setting a basking surface to a stated figure
The basking figure is a surface temperature, so you need a surface instrument. Pair it with a probe thermometer and hygrometer for the air gradient. Without these you are guessing at the only numbers that matter.
Specifications
- Measures
- Surface temperature
- Why it matters
- Basking targets are surface figures, not air figures
- Use
- Aim at the basking rock, not at the air above it
How it scored against our criteria
| Meets the published adult footprintAt or above the cited minimum for the species it is sold for - 4.5 sq ft floor for a leopard gecko, about 8 sq ft for an adult ball python, 48 x 24 x 24 in or larger for a dragon, 18 x 18 x 36 in for a crested gecko | Not published |

| Materials we can account forManufacturer states the panel material, and any interior coating has a published temperature limit above the species basking surface temperature | Not published |
What works
- Instant reading of the exact surface the animal lies on
- Cheap relative to everything else in a setup
- Finds cold spots a single probe will miss
What to know
- Reads surfaces only, so it tells you nothing about air temperature or humidity
- Emissivity differences between surfaces introduce small errors
Who should look elsewhere
It does not replace a probe thermometer. You need both: surface for the basking spot, probe for the ambient gradient.

6. Buy last: the substrate
The BioDude Terra Sahara Bioactive Substrate Kit
The BioDude · A bioactive arid build
Last, deliberately. Substrate can wait a week; a correct thermal gradient cannot. A bioactive-ready arid kit at the published 4-6 inch depth is the low-maintenance route.
Specifications
- Type
- Bioactive-ready arid substrate kit
- Depth
- Deep enough to burrow - 4-6 in for a dragon
- Replacement
- Long-lived, unlike a scheduled sand replacement
How it scored against our criteria
| Meets the published adult footprintAt or above the cited minimum for the species it is sold for - 4.5 sq ft floor for a leopard gecko, about 8 sq ft for an adult ball python, 48 x 24 x 24 in or larger for a dragon, 18 x 18 x 36 in for a crested gecko | Not published |

What works
- Designed to host a clean-up crew, so waste is processed rather than scooped
- Named in the same guidance that sets the 4-6 in depth figure
- Holds a burrow without an added clay component
What to know
- Costs considerably more upfront than mixing sand, soil and clay yourself
- A bioactive build needs the clean-up crew and plants to actually work
Who should look elsewhere
If you quarantine a new animal, do it on a sterile, replaceable surface. A bioactive build is the wrong environment for monitoring parasites.
Frequently asked questions
Are bearded dragon starter kits worth it?
Usually not. They bundle an undersized tank, a coil UVB bulb and no thermostat - the three components you will replace first, and the tank is the expensive one to replace.
What do you need for a bearded dragon setup?
Enclosure at adult footprint, dimming thermostat, halogen basking lamp, linear T5 HO UVB with a reflector fixture, infrared gun and probe thermometer/hygrometer, three hides, substrate at 4-6 in, and a 6500 K daylight lamp.
What should I buy first for a bearded dragon?
The enclosure at full adult size, then the thermostat, then the heat source. Substrate and decor last.
