Bearded dragon

40 gallon vs 120 gallon for a bearded dragon

This is not a close comparison. It is a grow-out against an adult enclosure, and the deciding factor is whether a thermal gradient fits.

By Brijon M.Last updated

The 120 gallon, which is typically 48 x 24 x 24 in. A 40 gallon breeder is about 36 x 18 in of floor and cannot hold a basking surface at 108-113 F (42-45 C) surface temperature at one end while the cool side stays at 77-85 F (25-29 C) surface, 72-99 F (22-37 C) air gradient. Use a 40 gallon as a grow-out only.

Why the gradient is the deciding factor

The published figures ask for two things at once: a basking surface at 108-113 F (42-45 C) surface temperature and a cool side at 77-85 F (25-29 C) surface, 72-99 F (22-37 C) air gradient, with an air gradient across the enclosure. A lamp powerful enough to hold the hot end at 113 F will, in a three-foot box, raise the cool end too. The dragon then has nowhere to go when it has finished basking, which is the exact failure the escalating size standards were responding to.

At four feet with a 24 inch depth the lamp can be concentrated at one end and the far end stays usable. That is the entire argument, and it is why we would rather talk about length than about gallons.

The height problem is the quiet one

A 40 gallon breeder is typically 16 inches tall. Put a 4 to 6 inch substrate layer in, add a basking platform, and the distance from the lamp to the animal's back is well under the 11 inches the Arcadia Desert 12% needs through mesh. You then either overshoot the UVI target or you remove the substrate depth - and neither is a setup you want.

Pick the 40 gallon if, pick the 120 if

  • Pick the 40 gallon if you are growing out a hatchling or quarantining a new animal, and you already own the adult enclosure or have a date for buying it.
  • Pick the 120 if the dragon is a juvenile or older, or if you are buying once. Going straight to the adult footprint with plenty of cover is a normal and well-supported approach.
  • Pick neither if your dragon is a full-size adult at 19 to 23 inches - the current published minimum is 72 x 24 x 24 in or 24 cubic feet, and the sizing page explains the divergence.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 40 gallon tank enough for a bearded dragon?

Not for an adult. It is below every current standard and cannot hold the published basking and cool-side temperatures simultaneously. It is a reasonable grow-out or quarantine enclosure.

How many gallons does a bearded dragon need?

Gallons are the wrong unit - they hide the floor area. Work in dimensions: 48 x 24 x 24 in as the floor, 72 x 24 x 24 in as the current published target for a full-size adult.

Can a bearded dragon live in a 120 gallon tank forever?

A 4x2x2 is accepted for individuals under about 18 inches total length. For a dragon at the 19-23 inch average, the current published minimum is larger.
