UVA vs UVB for reptiles

Different wavelengths, different jobs. The useful news is that one correctly chosen lamp supplies both, so this is a question about understanding rather than purchasing.

By Brijon M.Last updated

UVB drives vitamin D3 synthesis and calcium metabolism; without it a reptile cannot process dietary calcium properly. UVA is a wavelength reptiles can see as an additional color, and it supports normal vision and behavior. A reptile UVB lamp produces both, so you buy one lamp, not two.

Three bands, two that matter

Sunlight contains three ultraviolet bands. UVC destroys DNA and is blocked by the atmosphere, so it plays no part in reptile keeping and should play no part in your enclosure. UVA and UVB both reach the ground, and nearly all animals have evolved to depend on them: reptiles benefit from UVA for eyesight and from UVB for healthy metabolism, specifically vitamin D synthesis and calcium metabolism.

What each ultraviolet band does for a reptile
BandWhat it doesConsequence of absence
UVBDrives vitamin D3 synthesis, which enables calcium metabolismDietary calcium is poorly used; metabolic bone disease over time
UVAVisible to reptiles as an additional color; supports vision and normal behaviorA visually impoverished environment; reduced natural behavior
UVCNothing useful - destroys DNA, blocked by the atmosphereNot applicable. No reptile product should emit it

Why you do not buy them separately

A reptile UVB lamp produces UVA as well. The care guidance makes this point explicitly when arguing the case for UVB over crepuscular species: UVB bulbs also produce UVA light, a spectrum reptiles can see and humans cannot, which they perceive as an additional color. So the practical decision is not "UVA or UVB" - it is which UVB lamp, at what distance, for which Ferguson zone. That is the roundup.

Is UVA and UVB the same for reptiles?

No, and the difference matters in one practical way: UVB is the one with a dose. Too little and the animal cannot process calcium; too much and reduced-pigment morphs can be burned. That is why every UVB recommendation on this site carries a target UVI and a mount distance, while UVA carries neither. UVA is a quality-of-environment consideration; UVB is a quantitative husbandry parameter.

The crepuscular species question

You will be told that leopard geckos, crested geckos and ball pythons do not need UVB because they are not sun baskers. The honest position in the current guidance is that they are less dependent on it, not independent of it - and that when offered, these species bask under it and benefit. There is also a specific UVA argument for ball pythons, which can see ultraviolet light. We cover each species separately: leopard geckos, crested geckos, bearded dragons.

For a Zone 3 basker

Arcadia T5 HO Desert 12% UVB Lamp

Supplies the UVB a bearded dragon needs at a published distance, and the UVA that comes with it.

For a Zone 1 gecko

Arcadia ShadeDweller ProT5 Kit (7% UVB)

Low enough output to suit a crepuscular species, which is how you provide UVA and a safe UVB dose at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Do reptiles need UVA or UVB?

Both, and a reptile UVB lamp supplies both. UVB drives vitamin D3 synthesis and calcium metabolism; UVA is visible to reptiles as an additional color and supports normal vision and behavior.

Is UVA the same as UVB for reptiles?

No. They are different wavelength bands doing different jobs. UVB has a dose that must be targeted - a UVI figure at the basking surface - while UVA does not.

Will a UVA bulb give my reptile UVB?

No. If a lamp does not state a UVB output class and a mount distance, treat it as providing no usable UVB.

Wattage and percentage tell you almost nothing on their own. UV index at a stated mount distance is the number that decides whether a lamp is right for your animal.

Do leopard geckos need UVB?

Yes, at a low level: UVI 0.5-1.5, and no more than 0.5-0.7 for albino and patternless morphs.
