Bearded dragon
Bearded dragon basking setup
A basking spot is a surface at a temperature, under a lamp, at a height. Three variables, and most setups only ever adjust one of them.
By Brijon M.Last updated
Target 108-113 F (42-45 C) surface temperature measured on the slab with an infrared gun. Use a flat stone, slate or tile platform directly under a halogen lamp on a dimming thermostat, at the same end as the UVB, with the platform as the highest point in the enclosure.

Three variables, not one
A basking spot is usually adjusted by swapping bulb wattage. That is the least precise of the three controls available:
| Variable | What it changes | How to adjust |
|---|---|---|
| Lamp power | Total heat delivered | A dimming thermostat, which varies power continuously - better than swapping wattages |
| Lamp height | Intensity at the surface, and the size of the warm zone | Raise or lower the fixture |
| Slab material and mass | How much heat the surface stores and radiates | Stone, slate or tile rather than wood or plastic |
Use the thermostat for the fine control, the height for the coarse control, and pick the slab once.
The slab
Flat stone, slate or tile. Three reasons: it stores heat so the animal gets radiant warmth from below as well as above, it gives you a flat defined surface to point an infrared gun at, and it sits level without sinking into the substrate if you bed it on a clay-containing mix.
It should be the highest point in the enclosure and directly under both the heat lamp and the UVB fixture, because the published UVB distances are measured to the animal's back at the basking position.
Setting it, step by step
- Place the slab at one end, as the highest point, on a stable base.
- Mount the halogen lamp above it in a guarded fixture, mechanically secured.
- Put the thermostat probe at the slab surface, secured so it cannot fall off - a loose probe is the failure mode that drives a lamp continuously.
- Set the thermostat conservatively low and let the enclosure stabilize for an hour.
- Take an infrared reading of the slab. Raise the setpoint in small steps until the reading sits in the 108-113 F (42-45 C) surface temperature band.
- Check the air temperature in the basking area with a probe - a warm surface with cold air does not work, and air that is too hot causes heat stroke.
- Check the cool end reads 77-85 F (25-29 C) surface, 72-99 F (22-37 C) air gradient. If it does not, the enclosure is too short for the lamp you are running.
- Mount the UVB at its published distance measured to the animal's back on the slab.
The lamp
Exo Terra Intense Basking Spot Lamp
Halogen, because incandescent heating delivers the most Infrared-A - the band that penetrates tissue rather than only warming the air.
The control
Spyder Robotics Herpstat 1 Proportional Thermostat
Dimming output, so the lamp holds the band at part power. An on/off controller would strobe it.
The verification
Infrared Temperature Gun
Step 5 is impossible without it. The published basking figure is a surface temperature.
Zone size, not just temperature
A narrow spot produces a hot patch the dragon cannot fit on rather than a basking site. The slab should be large enough for the whole animal, and if a single lamp cannot heat that area evenly, two lamps placed close together is the published approach for larger enclosures - it is how the ball python guidance handles the same problem in a 4 ft enclosure.
Frequently asked questions
What temperature should a bearded dragon basking spot be?
108-113 F (42-45 C) surface temperature, measured as a surface temperature on the basking slab with an infrared gun.
What should a bearded dragon basking spot be made of?
Flat stone, slate or tile. It stores and radiates heat, gives a defined surface to measure, and sits level without sinking into the substrate.
How high should a bearded dragon basking lamp be?
Whatever height holds the slab at 108-113 F on a thermostat - set it by measurement rather than by a fixed figure. Separately, the UVB lamp has its own published distance, typically about 11 inches above the basking surface through mesh.
