Crested gecko

Crested gecko setup cost, line by line

No prices - just the line items in order. This is also the cheapest setup on the site to run, because the heat demand may be zero.

The one-off setup

Crested gecko setup line items in buying priority order
PriorityLine itemWhat drives the cost
1Terrarium at 18 x 18 x 36 inSize and material. The item you cannot incrementally upgrade
2Probe thermometer and hygrometer, x2Cheap. Buy before any heat source
3Drainage layer + substrate barrierOnly if planting or going bioactive
4Moisture-retentive substrateVolume. Less than an arid species needs, because the layer is shallower
5Moss and leaf litterSmall, and partly recurring
6Climbing structure - cork, branches, foliageFunctional, not decorative. Collected branches are legitimate
7Low-output T5 UVB + fixtureFixture one-time, tube annual
8Water dish and a mister or spray bottleMinimal
9Heat source + thermostatOnly if the measurements require it - often not

Why heat may be a line you skip

The published targets are 82-85 F (28-29 C) at the top of the enclosure at the top and 70-75 F (21-24 C) at the bottom at the bottom. Many indoor rooms sit inside that band for most of the year. Measure the enclosure over several days before buying a lamp - and remember that above 85 F sustained the risk is stress and heat stroke, so a heat source you do not need is not a neutral purchase.

Line item 2, before any lamp

Zoo Med Digital Thermometer and Humidity Gauge

Two of these - one at the top, one at the bottom - tell you whether line item 9 is needed at all. That makes them the highest-value purchase on the list.

The running costs guide has the electricity arithmetic. A crested gecko setup with no heat source and one low-output UVB tube is close to the floor of what a reptile enclosure can cost to run.

Where you genuinely can

  • Climbing structure. Collected and sterilized branches and cork work well, and the gecko does not care what they cost.
  • Plants. Propagated cuttings rather than bought specimens, once the pesticide question is handled.
  • Misting. A hand spray bottle does the job; an automated misting system is a convenience rather than a requirement.
  • Water dish. Any shallow, stable, cleanable dish.

Line item 4

Coconut Husk / Cypress Mulch Humid Substrate

A shallower layer than an arid species needs, because this floor is a humidity reservoir rather than a burrowing medium.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a crested gecko cage cost?

We do not quote figures, because prices move and a stale number looks authoritative. The line items are above in priority order, each linking to current pricing. The terrarium is the largest single item.

Are crested geckos cheap to keep?

Running costs are the lowest of the species on this site, because many homes sit inside the species temperature range and so no heat source is needed. The main recurring electrical item is a single low-output UVB tube.

Do I need to buy a heat lamp for a crested gecko?

Measure first. The targets are 82-85 F at the top and 70-75 F at the bottom, and many rooms sit inside that. A heat source you do not need is not a neutral purchase, because above 85 F sustained the risk is stress and heat stroke.
