Bearded dragon
5 best bearded dragon enclosures (2026), sized against the published minimum
Most roundups rank by price. This one rules out anything that cannot hold a basking surface at one end and a cool side at the other.
By Brijon M.Last updated
Treat 48 x 24 x 24 in as the floor and 72 x 24 x 24 in (24 cubic feet) as the target for a full-size adult. The enclosure has to hold a basking surface at 108-113 F (42-45 C) surface temperature at one end and 77-85 F (25-29 C) surface, 72-99 F (22-37 C) air gradient at the other, which is why length matters more than gallons.

How we picked
Every pick below is scored against these thresholds, stated as numbers. Publishing them is the point: of the competitor roundups we surveyed, not one published a numeric selection threshold.
Meets the published adult footprint
At or above the cited minimum for the species it is sold for - 4.5 sq ft floor for a leopard gecko, about 8 sq ft for an adult ball python, 48 x 24 x 24 in or larger for a dragon, 18 x 18 x 36 in for a crested gecko
Source: ReptiFiles - Bearded Dragon Terrarium Size Requirements
Front-opening access
Doors on the front, not a lift-off lid. Less startling for the animal and harder to escape from
Holds the species humidity range
Material and lid design can hold the species target without constant intervention - 30-40% for a leopard gecko, 60-80% for a crested gecko
Takes a T5 fixture at a workable distance
Mesh top or internal mounting that puts a T5 HO lamp at its published distance - about 11 in through mesh for an Arcadia Desert 12%
Source: ReptiFiles - Bearded Dragon Temperatures & UVB Requirements
Supports a real thermal gradient
Long enough that the cool end actually reaches the species cool-side figure while the basking surface holds its target
Source: ReptiFiles - Bearded Dragon Temperatures & UVB Requirements
Materials we can account for
Manufacturer states the panel material, and any interior coating has a published temperature limit above the species basking surface temperature

Why the footprint column is the whole review
A bearded dragon enclosure has one job that every other feature serves: holding a thermal gradient. The basking end has to reach 108-113 F (42-45 C) surface temperature as a surface temperature while the cool end stays at 77-85 F (25-29 C) surface, 72-99 F (22-37 C) air gradient. An enclosure that is too short cannot do both at once, which means the animal has nowhere to go when it is done basking.
That is the actual reason the size standards keep rising, and the source we cite is explicit about the history: 36 x 18 x 18 in, then 48 x 18 x 21 in, then 48 x 24 x 24 in, and now 6 x 2 x 2 ft or 24 cubic feet on the reasoning that an enclosure should be about three times the lizard's total length and 24 inches tall, for an animal averaging 19 to 23 inches. The sizing page covers the divergence in full.
What else has to be true
- Front-opening. Reaching in from above is how you get a defensive animal, and lift-off lids are what escapees push through.
- A mesh panel the UVB fixture can sit over. The published Arcadia Desert 12% distance is about 11 inches through mesh. If your lid has no mesh you need an internal mount and the no-mesh figure of 16 to 17 inches, which a 24 inch tall enclosure may not give you.
- Enough depth for substrate. A 4 to 6 inch packed layer is the published figure, and it has to sit below the door line.
- A material you can account for. See the materials guide.
What to avoid
The complete starter kit, for the reasons set out in the beginner mistakes guide: an undersized tank, a coil UVB bulb and no thermostat, all of which get replaced. And buying by gallons - a 120 gallon rating tells you nothing about whether the floor is 4 ft or 3 ft long, which is the figure that decides your gradient.
The picks in full

1. Best 4x2x2 for most keepers
Zen Habitats 4x2x2 PVC Reptile Enclosure
Zen Habitats · A 4x2x2 adult dragon or an adult ball python
The enclosure most dragon keepers should buy, and the footprint score is partial for an honest reason: 48 x 24 x 24 in is the standard the US market works to and the standard ReptiFiles accepts for dragons under about 18 in total length, but it is below the 24 cubic feet that same source now sets for a full-size adult. Everything else about it is right - front-opening, PVC, mesh top at a workable T5 distance.
Specifications
- Footprint
- 48 x 24 x 24 in (about 120 gallons)
- Material
- PVC panels with an aluminum frame
- Opening
- Front-opening doors
- Top
- Mesh, lamp-compatible

What works
- Front-opening, which is the access pattern every care reference prefers
- PVC holds humidity far better than screen-topped glass
- Mesh top takes a T5 HO fixture without an internal mount
What to know
- Does not reach the 24 cubic feet ReptiFiles now sets as its bearded dragon minimum
- Assembly is required and the panels are large to handle alone
Who should look elsewhere
If your dragon is a full-size adult at 19-23 in total length, the current ReptiFiles minimum is 6 x 2 x 2 ft or 24 cubic feet. Buy the 6 ft size instead of this one.

2. Best when you want climbing height
Zen Habitats 4x2x4 PVC Reptile Enclosure
Zen Habitats · Arboreal species, or a dragon setup with a climbing level
Dragons climb more than their reputation suggests, and 48 inches of height gives you a genuine second level. It scores partial on gradient because a tall insulated box takes more work to keep the cool end actually cool - budget for a proportional thermostat rather than an on/off unit.
Specifications

| Materials we can account forManufacturer states the panel material, and any interior coating has a published temperature limit above the species basking surface temperature | Partial |
What works
- Vertical space is the binding constraint for arboreal species, and this has it
- Same PVC humidity retention as the 4x2x2
- Room to mount a UVB fixture well above a basking branch
What to know
- Height makes a basking gradient harder to control without a thermostat
- Overkill for a strictly terrestrial animal
Who should look elsewhere
A leopard gecko gets nothing from 48 in of height. Floor area is its constraint, so buy a 36 x 18 x 18 in instead and spend the difference on substrate depth.

3. Best alternative 4x2x2
Dubia.com 4x2x2 (120 Gallon) Reptile Enclosure
Dubia.com · An adult ball python, or a small adult dragon
Same class as the Zen Habitats unit and named in the published enclosure recommendations. The lamp-mount score is partial because solid PVC lids vary in how much mesh panel they give you, and that changes your UVB distance arithmetic - check it before you buy the lamp.
Specifications
- Footprint
- 48 x 24 x 24 in (120 gallon)
- Material
- PVC
- Opening
- Front-opening
- Humidity
- Opaque on five sides, which helps hold humidity
How it scored against our criteria

What works
- Carries the 8 sq ft of floor area an adult ball python needs
- Opaque sides give a snake visual security without taping paper to glass
- PVC is lighter than a glass tank of the same volume
What to know
- Ventilation needs checking if you run it humid for a python
- Shipping damage on large panels is a real risk with any flat-pack enclosure
Who should look elsewhere
If your ball python is over 4 ft, the enclosure should be at least as long as the snake. Go to a 5 or 6 ft build rather than forcing an adult into a 4 ft box.

4. Best glass option for a juvenile
REPTI ZOO Front-Opening Glass Terrarium
REPTI ZOO · A leopard gecko at the 36 x 18 x 18 in minimum
Included deliberately with a failing footprint score, because a 36 x 18 x 18 in glass terrarium is a reasonable grow-out and a bad adult home. Glass dissipates heat well, which makes the gradient easy, and the enclosure is dead on arrival as an adult setup. Buy it knowing you will replace it.
Specifications
- Common sizes
- 36 x 18 x 18 in and 18 x 18 x 24 in among others
- Material
- Glass with a screen top
- Opening
- Front-opening doors
- Lock
- Door lock included on most models
How it scored against our criteria

What works
- Glass dissipates heat well, which makes a temperature gradient easier to establish
- Front-opening is less startling for the animal than reaching in from above
- Easy to see and easy to clean
What to know
- A screen top sheds humidity constantly, which is the wrong trade for a crested gecko or ball python
- Heavy, and a large glass tank is awkward to move once filled
Who should look elsewhere
If you need to hold 60-80% humidity, glass with a screen top will fight you every day. Buy PVC instead and stop misting four times a day.
Frequently asked questions
What size tank does an adult bearded dragon need?
48 x 24 x 24 in is the floor. The current published minimum is 6 ft L x 2 ft W x 2 ft H (1.8 x 0.6 x 0.6 m), or 24 cubic feet of internal volume, with 4x2x2 accepted for individuals that stay under about 18 inches total length.
Is a 40 gallon breeder big enough for a bearded dragon?
No, not for an adult. It is below every current standard and it cannot hold a basking surface at 108-113 F at one end and a cool side at 77-85 F at the other.
Should a bearded dragon enclosure be PVC or glass?
Either works for a dry-kept dragon. Glass dissipates heat and makes the gradient easier; PVC is lighter and holds humidity better if your home runs very dry. Full comparison.
